Fraxel Repair Laser - Part Two

Neysa Wilkins

Edith Wilkins has heard the pros and cons of laser surgery and has decided the pros win out. "I almost backed out several times..." The morning of the procedure staff members at the cosmetic vein and laser center apply a special numbing cream to Miss Edith’s face and give her a sedative to help her relax. Then about 30 minutes later she is led to the room for shots to numb her face ...similar to what you experience at the dentist. "They’re very groggy and relaxed while I’m doing that... so they really are unaware of it, so most patients don't feel anything." Dr. Moskoqitz puts numbing drops in Miss Edith’s eyes along with some protective contact lenses that allow the laser to go over the eyelids giving a sort of lid lift. Then it's time to make Miss Edith look years younger. "It consistently takes about 10 to 12 years off of someone’s age by erasing sun spots and age spots." "As we age we get this sort of fine crepeness under the eyes and it really improves that and it improves the deeper lines around the mouth... People are ecstatic about that." “It’s also the first laser that has a very significant effect in tightening the skin, very much like a face lift." Dr. Moskowitz says the Fraxel Laser is unique in that it's the first laser that treats a fraction of the skin surface, rather than vaporizing the whole epidermis and taking away the entire skin surface. "So actually as I glide the laser hand the laser wand over the skin surface you can actually see these tiny microscopic dots of laser energy that are vaporizing tissue down into the dermis and what this does it--- it causes the skin to come in and rapidly heal the treated areas because it leaves healthy nests of cells around each laser dot that is treated." The healthy nests of tissue are surrounding the treated areas, patients heal more quickly. With a traditional laser, patients would have redness and crusting for close to a month and a half...with Fraxel, it's just 4 to 6 days. The treatment itself takes about 30 minutes for the face and about 35 if you include the neck.
