If you've ever been hospitalized, or even visited the doctor's office, you know how important nurses are. And so do the administrators at our local hospitals.

Tuesday, Bay Medical Center showed some of their nurses just how much they are appreciated.

As part of nurses week celebration hospital officials handed out "Nursing Excellence Awards." Many nurses were nominated from the different departments, and Tuesday four outstanding nurses were given the final awards.

Arleen Hughes won for certified nursing assistant of the year, Amber Crowe walked away with licensed practical nurse honors, and Tami Grice for registered nurse.

The top award given out is known as the Dr. Joan Elzawahry clinical excellence award. That went to Dee Dee Cash, who says she's honored, but adds she couldn't do her job without a lot of help.

She says "This award goes to all of them, because clinical excellence doesn't happen by yourself. If it weren't for everyone in this hospital, pharmacy, clinical epistolary services, all of the aides on the floor and of course my fellow nurses who are a team, none of this would be possible."

Nurses week wraps up Thursday, which is Florence Nightingale's birthday.

Wonderful that we recognize the service that the nurses and support staff perform. Even though his name wasn't mentioned on camera my son, Adam Yohn was one of those recognized for excellent service. I am so proud of him for the sacrifices he has made to persue his career.
