Holy Smoke(s)!!

For most of NWFL there was not a cloud in the sky... unless you were in Gulf County where a wildfire put a lot of smoke in the sky!

Days like today can be pretty boring when it comes to the weather... 80 and sunny.  But sometimes days like today can turn out to be very interesting.  That is what makes the weather and my job so much fun!

There ended up being a controlled burn in Gulf County today that showed up on radar.  This controlled burn though quickly became an uncontrolled wildfire.  Originally I did not get the notice of the fire, but I was able to figure it out pretty quickly when VIPIR shows rain, but the satellite shows no clouds over NWFL!  Below is what VIPIR showed around 6:30pm...

During the 6pm news I shows the above image on VIPIR and requested viewer pics of the smoke since we do not have any cameras down that way.  I got several pictures shortly thereafter including the below picture from Melinda Reynolds who snapped this gem looking east/southeast on the Overstreet Bridge over the Inland Coastal Waterway.

Notice the smoke blowing from left to right at the lower levels (south to north).  This is because of the seabreeze from the Gulf/St. Joe Bay.  The smoke them changed directions and blew from north to south because winds above the surface were actually out of the north.

Smoke

Anyway, kinda neat even on an otherwise boring weather day.  The smoke helped show something that happens all the time this time of year during the summer... the seabreeze front and the seabreeze circulation pattern.

As always, if you have any weather questions do not hesitate to contact me.

Thanks for watching.

Sincerely,
