Humane Society Receives Close to $16,000 in Donations

The Humane Society of Bay County received another boost Tuesday toward its goal of raising $100,000.

The Jelks Family Foundation presented Humane Society leaders with a $10,000 check this morning. The foundation promotes cultural, environmental and humanitarian programs through charitable giving and active participation.

In June Humane Society officials announced that they'd have to close the shelter if they'd could not raise the $100,000 within 90 days. Since then the community has stepped up their efforts to help save Bay County's only no-kill shelter.

"It really is a tribute and it really shows today that this community has turned out from every demographic, every spectrum, every age group and every corner of the community," said Catherine Zehner, Humane Society of Bay co. Marketing Director.

"Hopefully, if they can raise money to keep this shelter open, there will continue to be homes for pets and they won't be wandering out in the wild, and also the no-kill policy is something we admire," said Allen Jelks, Jelks Family Foundation President.

Also today the Humane Society received a check from Club La Vela for the benefit concert they put on last week. The concert raised close to $6,000 for the animal shelter.
