“Growing up in Apartheid South Africa”

Naomi Tutu, daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa, will be the featured keynote speaker at the 14th annual Florida Chautauqua Assembly scheduled for January 29 through February 1 throughout the Historic District of DeFuniak Springs.

Ms. Tutu’s presentation is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 9:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in DeFuniak Springs. This year’s Assembly theme is “A Journey into Africa.”

Ms. Tutu will speak on growing up in Apartheid South Africa. She is the third child of Archbishop Desmond and Nomalizo Leah Tutu and was born in South Africa. She was educated in Swaziland, the United States and England and has divided her adult life between South Africa and the United States.

She has led Truth and Reconciliation Workshops for groups dealing with different types of conflict and is a consultant to two organizations which reflect the breadth of her involvement in issues of human rights, including the Spiritual Alliance to Stop Intimate Violence, founded by renowned author Riane Eisler and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Betty Williams, and the Foundation for Hospices in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“We are proud to welcome Ms. Tutu to the historic assembly and DeFuniak Springs,” says Florida Chautauqua Center president Christopher Mitchell. “We hope everyone has an opportunity to meet this remarkable woman who comes from a family that has had such an incredible impact on our world.”

Each of the first 3 days of the Assembly will open with prominent speakers like Ms. Tutu. On Thursday, Gregory Garland of the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs will discuss “News You Can Use about Africa.” On Friday, former co-star of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, Jim Fowler, will discuss (with animals!) conservation and preservation efforts in Africa and how similar programs can be applied to our own backyards. Ms. Tutu will speak on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. on Growing up in Apartheid South Africa.
