Walton Students Will Conduct a Mock Trial in a Real Courtroom

Walton County School District’s Youth Leadership students at South Walton High School and Freeport High School will join together to truly bring learning to life as students conduct a “mock trial” on Thursday, May 21st, 1:00 p.m. at the Walton County Courthouse with Judge Kelvin Wells.

The entire case will be conducted and decided by high school students in Walton County. South Walton High School students will serve as prosecutors, defense attorneys, and witness. Freeport High School students will serve as jurors for the case.

Students at South Walton High School have been working for weeks in preparing the case. The class of 19 juniors and seniors will serve as prosecutors, defense attorneys, and witnesses in the case of an attempted murder for the mock trial. The South Walton High School Youth Leadership class is offered to select students each day and is offered as an elective course with instructor Meredith Spence. Freeport High School also established a Youth Leadership program this year with the class meeting monthly with Assistant Principal Charlie Marello rather than daily. The class of 10 juniors and seniors will serve as jurors.

“I’m looking forward to bringing this case to life for our students in a real courtroom,” said Meredith Spence. “I’m thrilled Freeport High students are joining us. Together, these students will gain a deeper understanding of our judicial system and the functions it serves.”
