It's a family fun event that has veen held for the last eight years, and has only gotten stronger.

"The kids enjoy it and they'll talk about it all year," says Ronnie Barnes, a volunteer for the event.

Local farmers and volunteers come together every summer to use up the prolific zucchini crop.

In the last several years, they've gotten pretty good at using the vegetable as a racecar.

"Zucchini's grow longer and straighter so they make better racers. Much more streamline,"says Barnes.

"It's fun because I get to use the vegetable rather than otherwise throwing it away," says one participant.

Organizers for the event say that they're really easy to make. All you need is one zucchini, two doll rods, four wooden wheels, four wooden chips, and lots of decorations. They also say a tip is to use plastic straws as wheel bearings.

All of the materials were donated by local farmers and volunteers, giving local children a chance to race their homemade cars all morning.

There were even cash prizes for race-winners, thanks to donations by farmer's market visitors.

"We have cash donations today, people donated to our little tip bucket. Then we give it back to the chilren. We have 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th places," says one volunteer.

Volunteers say they've gotten the most monetary donations they've ever received.

They hope that all of their efforts will give the children some important lessons.

"Maybe if they play with their food, they can learn to cook them in different ways," says Barnes.

Zucchini races has become a popular event across the country during the summer season, there is even a National Association of Zucchini Racing Rule Book.
