Bay County School Board members give themselves a raise and now make more than a first-year teacher.

School Board members first brought up the 1.8 percent increase last month and gave its finally stamp of approval in a 4 to 1 vote Wednesday afternoon.

The increase brings their annual salary to $30,194, about $4,000 more than starting teachers, but some board members say they deserve it.

"Our salary is now a little more than the salary of a first-year teacher. That doesn't mean we don't deserve it, it just means teachers aren't getting paid enough. Now there's a push for us to look at the entire salary schedule and see what we can do," says Ron Danzey, School Board Chairman.

Representatives with the Association of Bay County Educators say they're okay with the board's increased salary.
