Bay County School Board members are hoping for an extension on the half-cent sales tax local voters passed for improvements to area schools.
Board members and the Oversight Committee toured local schools that benefit from the tax on Tuesday to confirm the money was being spent properly.
The half-cent sales tax went into effect in 1998. It's scheduled to expire in February 2008, but School Board officials already say they want to extend the program. The main reason is for the maintenance and upkeep on the improvements made to area schools.
Board member Thelma Rohan says without the money for upkeep, schools will end up back where they started, in disrepair.
Local voters would have to approve an extension on the half cent sales tax in 2007.
