Two Bay High Students Charged With Deliberately Killing State Park Deer

Two Bay High students are in trouble with the law after allegedly running over a deer at St. Andrew State Park at Panama City Beach.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said 17-year-old Chase Smeby, a senior, and 17-year-old Matthew Tucker, a junior, are each charged with illegally killing a deer and felony cruelty to animals.

Officers say Smeby intentionally ran over an 80 pound doe on the side of a state park road and then the two teens killed the deer by beating it with a baseball bat.

The investigation showed that a third person in Smeby’s truck, Thomas Reams, was thrown off the truck’s tool box when the vehicle accelerated toward the deer. Reams was knocked unconscious.

The deer was found in a freezer in Tucker's home.
