Jackson County School Board Moves Closer to Drug Testing

Exams won’t be the only thing student athletes in Jackson County will have to pass before they take to the field.

School Board members in Marianna are currently working on a new random drug policy for all students participating in athletics. The policy will include cheerleaders and members of the marching bands.

Five percent of the student athletes will be randomly be tested at any one time and 10 percent of the group will also be tested for steroids.

The Jackson County unveiled its new policy at its meeting Tuesday afternoon, but they have to advertise it for three weeks before a formal vote can be taken. That vote will come in early November. Approval is expected.

A federal grant of $127,000 will pay for the testing.
