Take Stock in Children partners with the Bay Education Foundation in Bay County to provide a scholarship program for deserving middle and high school students. One part of that program is the annual
Christmas store, which serves to reinforce the three areas of focus—achievement, attendance, attitude— for the Take Stock scholars.
Students shop for their families and friends with “Holiday Bucks” earned based on their performance.
This year’s Christmas Store will be held December 9, 2008, at 8:30 A.M. at the Nelson Administrative
“Students earn bucks throughout the year,” said Beth Deluzain, Executive Director of the Bay Education Foundation.
“In December, they can spend the bucks on Christmas gifts during our quarterly breakfast meeting. We also use this event to emphasize their responsibility to give back to those who support their efforts.”
Bay Education Foundation staff and board members shop throughout the year to stock the Christmas store.
In addition, five or six private individuals usually contribute a number of gifts for the store.
“We don’t solicit donations from the community,” said Deluzain, “because we prefer to ask our community for donations to the scholarship fund, and we don’t want to be perceived as always having our hands out.”
This year the Christmas store features almost 900 items, ranging in price from $1.50 to $100. Students earned a total of about $5,000; the inventory totaled almost $6,000.
“Items not purchased by the kids are sold for real cash to employees, which helps to reduce our cost. Then all remaining items are stored until the next year,” explains Deluzain. “Our actual cost is probably about $500, including food for the breakfast.”
