Minutes after receiving a $285,000 salary bonus, the president of the University of Florida announced that he will donate the money to the school.
At a Monday meeting of the university's board of trustees, President Bernie Machen said he wants the money to go to the Opportunity Scholars program. As the donor, Machen can say how he wants the money spent.
The program, which Machen founded, is for first-generation college students whose family income is below $40,000 and whose parents never earned bachelor's degrees. Some 1,100 students at the Gainesville institution receive the scholarships to pay for tuition and other costs.
Machen's base pay at UF is $414,000, $225,000 of which is paid by the state.
The bonus is for his work in the past year.
