Springfield Elementary School teachers are giving back to the community instead of buying each other Christmas gifts this year. The faculty collected more than 100 stuffed animals, toys and books to donate to the Springfield fire and police departments.
The students presented the gifts to representatives from those agencies and Springfield Mayor Robert Walker during a school assembly this morning.
Officers and firefighters give the gifts to children when responding to emergency situations, like traffic crashes, house fires, or domestic disturbances.
"We had no idea what we were going to get. This is great, because our stock at the police department was just about depleted from some donations that were given to us earlier in the year," said Phillip Thorne, Springfield Police Chief.
