Alfred I. DuPont Foundation supports students who wish to attend college with a $100,000 gift to GCCC

The GCCC Foundation was pleased to welcome a long-time supporter and friend of the college, Mr. Robert Nedley, of the Alfred I. duPont Foundation, to the January 15 District Board of Trustees meeting.

At the meeting, Mr. Nedley made a special presentation to the college in the form of a $100,000 check for Port St. Joe High graduates.

The Alfred I. duPont Foundation has been a major supporter of the college for many years, and this gift will ensure and expand educational opportunities and access for area residents. To meet the needs of the community, the gift offers scholarship opportunities for Port St. Joe High School graduates with at least a 2.0 GPA.

“The support of Mr. Nedley and the duPont Foundation has made a marked difference in the lives of students at Gulf Coast Community College, opportunity and hope has been extended to dozens of students because of this generosity,” said Dr. Jim Kerley, GCCC President.

Alfred I. duPont was a visionary leader committed to Northwest Florida’s economic development in the 1930s. This gift is in the spirit of Mr. duPont’s philanthropic intent and in his will he stated the following, “It has been my firm conviction throughout life that it is the duty of every one in this world to do what is within his power to alleviate human suffering.”

Since 1981, the Alfred I. duPont Foundation has supported The Gulf Coast Community College Foundation’s mission to provide scholarship support that gives educational opportunities to deserving students and enhance the educational programs and student services available at Gulf Coast Community College. To date, the Alfred I. duPont Foundation has contributed $1,073,465 to the Gulf Coast Community College Foundation and is one of the most generous benefactors in the history of the college.

The initial gift made by the Alfred I. duPont Foundation of $50,000, combined with state and federal matching funds, grew to $183,333, which has been endowed. As of 2009, 180 students have been able to attend Gulf Coast Community College from that initial gift. The principal will never be spent, so the gift will continue in perpetuity, allowing future students to obtain their educational goals.

In support of the Gulf Coast Community College Foundation’s “Legacy of Trust” campaign, the Alfred I. duPont Foundation generously bestowed $350,000 in endowed scholarship support from the fall of 2003 to 2006.

In summary, the Alfred I. duPont has contributed $600,000 for scholarship support. A total of 49 endowed scholarships have been established and hundreds of students have been given hope for a better future. The Alfred I. duPont Foundation’s generous giving history demonstrates a continued belief in the Gulf Coast Community College Foundation’s mission, but also reinforces a shared commitment to making a difference in future of our community.
