Bay Co. School Board Approves Some Rezoning Changes

Bay County School Board Members are in the process of balancing out the numbers of students at all of the county's public schools. Despite all the uproar over the rezoning, not one member of the public showed up to Wednesday night's public hearing to express an opinion.

The only rezoning issue stirring any significant discussion from the Board dealt with Mosley High School. A portion of Mosley's students are being rezoned to Bay, Rutherford and Bozeman High Schools. Board Members debated whether to include the entire Venetian Villas area in the new Bay High zone.
After hearing from the rezoning committee, Board Member Donna Allen was the only one to vote against the plan.

"Bay High is an older area. The Bay High area is contracting because it is an aging area and it's going to contract somewhat over the next 5 years. So we're rezoning this thing for down the road. That was what was taken into consideration is trying to move as little as possible without it being affected for one time, but to give room for growth of those schools like Mosley that has a lot of growth and Deane Bozeman," said Larry Carroll, Bay County Schools Rezoning Committee Member.
Some students may not be affected by the zoning changes. Board Members approved a new school choice policy Wednesday allowing all high school students to remain at their current school.

As for other rezoning changes made Wednesday:
-Cherry St. Elementary is receiving the bulk of the students from Millville Elementary's closure
-Some of Merritt Brown's students are moving to Mowat
-Rosenwald students are being divided fairly equally between Jinks and Everitt

-Many of these students will also be able to grandfather in depending on the grade they are in. You can check out the new school choice policy on the Bay District webpage. You can also contact the District office at 872-4328.

The Board will complete the rezoning issue next Tuesday evening. At that time Members will discuss the following school zones: Patronis Elementary, Breakfast Point Academy, Hutchison Beach Elementary, Deane Bozeman School and Mosley High School.

Starting April 1, you can log onto the Bay District website, type in your address, and get an updated map of your child's school zone.

School choice enrollment will also be accessible through the Bay District Schools website this year.
