TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida now ranks second nationwide in the number of board certified teachers, with an additional 651 instructors earning their certification in 2009. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards announced the new figures Wednesday. Miami-Dade and Broward counties had the highest number of teachers achieving certification in the state this year.
Karen Garr, a regional outreach director for the board, says certified teachers help students learn more because they have a depth of knowledge teaching a specific subject to a targeted age group. State legislators opted to do away with covering 90 percent of the $2,500 fee for teachers earning their certification last year in light of declines in revenue.
