Early Start Date for Walton County School District?

It appears Bay County is not the only school district requesting an earlier school start date.

The Walton county School District Calendar Committee released the 2010-2011 draft calendar Tuesday and the committee is requesting to waive the start date.

In the new proposed calendar, school will begin on August 12th rather than August 24th. The district is currently designated as a “high performing school” by the State Board of Education; in the state of Florida, high performing school districts are able to request a change in the start date for the upcoming school year. The calendar will be presented to the board for approval on March 2nd.

The committee is asking for input from the public. To view the proposed calendar year, please see the document above, or, visit the Walton County School District Website here.

The spirit and intention of the law was that no student in the state of Florida would be forced to attend school any earlier than 2 weeks before Labor Day. Forcing students to attend school in the first half of August is insane.
