Panama City Beach - Our first Golden Apple Award winner of this school year is a third grade teacher at Breakfast Point Academy on Panama City Beach. While Mrs. Mixon brings more than two decades of experience to the classroom, it might be her smile and confidence-boosting personality that her students appreciate most.
We are just a few weeks into the school year, but Mrs. Mixon's students already know it's going to be a great one. "We have a very nice teacher and I like all the hard questions and stuff," said third grader Blake Holman.
On this day they are planning a party, a writing party. "We want them to get familiar with the terms for writing. We want them to feel so comfortable when they sit down for their 4th grade F-CAT that they are ready and prepared and feel the utmost of confidence about writing," said Terri Mixon.
Building students' self esteem is something her colleagues say Mrs. Mixon excels at. "Mrs. Mixon's personality makes the kids feel relaxed and confident. She boosts their confidence tremendously throughout the year," said Principal Denise Kelley. "She helps us and she is nice to us," said 3rd grader Breanna Morgan. "She is really nice and whenever we need help and she can't, she will just stop what she is doing and help us," said 3rd grader Ethan Coats.
She tutors struggling students, doing anything necessary to help them excel. "She engages students throughout the learning process with different techniques, she also does lots of hands-on techniques with her children to make their learning applicable," said Kelley.
Congratulations to Mrs. Mixon, this week's Golden Apple Award winning teacher.
