Panama City - This week's Golden Apple winner is Marsha Winkles, a 3rd grade teacher at Callaway Elementary School. Mrs. Winkles' students and colleagues say her positive attitude is contagious, and her optimism is motivating.
"No matter what is going on, she always has a smile for everybody," said Assistant Principal Lisa Jones. In Mrs. Winkles' 3rd grade classroom, challenging mathematical concepts are taught not from a book, but hands-on, using rubberbands to create angles and shapes.
Catering to different learning styles is one of her specialties, according to Jones. "She is interested in how they learn. She makes adjustments so that all those modalities are met."
She works with students one-on-one, something Justin Tharp really appreciates. "She is the best teacher ever," he said. He nominated her not one time but "like 50."
She cares deeply for her students and wants them to know that. "Our room is like a family because we spend more time together during the school year than anyone else. I try to let them know that I love them and it matters to me not just now but ten years from now, 20 years from now," said Mrs. Winkles. "I had some really good teachers while I was growing up that really made a difference in my life so I wanted to be able to make a difference in the lives of someone else."
