TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The new chairman of the Florida Board of Governors says it may have delegated too much authority to individual universities' boards of trustees.
Chairman Dean Colson told the House Education Committee that the board plans to re-evaluate its constitutional role.
Colson says he believes there are some situations when the governors must weigh in -- especially when things go bad.
The latest incident has been the hazing death of a Florida A&M University band member.
Colson appeared in conjunction with the committee's examination of higher education in Florida that was ordered by Speaker Dean Cannon.
At the start of the legislative session the Winter Park Republican said he feared it was "racing toward mediocrity" in part because of the board's uncertainty about its role.
