Vernon - This week's Golden Apple award winning teacher Mrs. Linda Howell teaches Pre-K at Vernon Elementary School. Spend just a few minutes in Mrs. Howell's classroom and you'll see she has a gift for working with young children who are very active.
Parents of her students say Mrs. Howell is patience personified. She works with 3, 4, and 5 year olds in a Pre-K special needs classroom at Vernon Elementary. There is never a dull moment, and that is the way she likes it. "I enjoy what I do, I love going to work to play, that is what I do," said Mrs. Howell.
Her colleagues marvel at her ability to work with such an active and unique group. "It's not just the textbook teaching that goes on in Pre-K, it's more what they can remember and teaching basic skills. A lot of them have speech issues and she works with them and has alot of patience with them," said Assistant Principal Lisa Burdeshaw.
The children have different needs that she addresses one on one. "Everything is individualized. We do group activities but then we individualize to each child."
While teaching her students is her focus everyday, she is also having a significant impact on the para-professional who works along side her. "She is a great teacher and working with her inspires me to learn more about teaching." Mrs. Howell herself was inspired by someone years ago. "I had a wonderful teacher and she inspired me to do what she did. I loved everything we did and wanted to do that."
Perhaps the best recognition comes from her students. Michael says she is "nice!" Dylan says: "I like going to school." Something Mrs. Howell hopes never changes.
