Panama City Beach - This week's Golden Apple award winner is a 5th grade teacher at Hutchison Beach Elementary School. Spend just a few minutes in Lora Rogers class and you'll understand immediately why her students love her.
In Ms. Rogers class it's all hands up, almost all the time. Everyone wants to participate. "There is so much pressure put on students that I don't think I felt as a child so I want to make sure that when my kids walk through my door in the morning they get to be themselves," said Lora Rogers. Mission accomplished, according to her students. "She is very kind, she is sweet, and she is serious when it comes to our work," said student Faith Breazeal.
Ms. Rogers utilizes technology, like a Mimeo board, when teaching, something her students really respond to. "She does these scientific experiments that we do on the board with the computer. They are one of my favorite things to do because science is my favorite subject," said Raven Poston.
She knows 5th grade is an important year for students. "When you teach 5th grade you really have two jobs. You have to teach the 5th grade standards and get them prepared for middle school. I try to teach them how to be organized, how to be responsible and kind of get them ready to switch classes and have that extra responsibility."
It was student Christian Bennett who nominated her. "She helps us with everything that we need help on, she just loves teaching," said Christian. "She is the kind of teacher that got into this profession because she wanted to make a difference," said Principal Shirley Ramsey.
Congratulations to Ms. Rogers, this week's Golden Apple award winning teacher.
