Panama City - The first school choice deadline is approaching, and one local school is making a push to attract students. Jinks Middle School held a recruitment event Thursday called "Jinks Extravaganza" .
This is the first time Jinks Middle School's held this type of event this early in the year.
"We just want to show everyone that jinks is a wonderful school. We still have excellent students, excellent teachers. We are, i believe, the top middle school in bay county," Guidance Counselor Michelle Stratton says.
She said the school's been working hard this year to shed a bad reputation, and wants to make people aware of the school's assets. For instance, Jinks Middle School is the only school in the district that has a smart board in every room. Teachers say this interactive tool makes teaching easier, and learning more fun for their students. Jinks also has the ability to stream videos school-wide using wireless technology. But 6th grader Emily Keen says Jinks has more to offer than technology, like an involved student government.
"We go on trips to Tallahassee and learn about the economics of how we need to do things for jinks. We also do dances and different activities for sports," she said.
Stratton says all these programs and tools reflect on students performance; Jinks earned 4-A's and 2 B's on the FCAT. Extra-curricular activities aren't bad either. Jinks boasts an undefeated, championship basketball team.
Guests Thursday saw the science labs and technology in action after the basketball game and a dinner in the school cafeteria.
