Panama City - This week's Golden Apple award winner is a teacher at Jinks Middle School in Panama City. From coaching on the basketball court to teaching in the classroom, colleagues and students say Harry Gainer is a team player and a rolemodel. His books say he teaches social studies, but students say Mr. Gainer teaches them how to live.
Respect. In Mr. Gainer's classroom you'd better earn it, and you'd better show it. "Maybe half of the time we are not talking about geography we are talking about just life in general, about being respectful to other people, to classmates, to adults to authority," said Harry Gainer.
"He teaches us how we can't act up and how we need to get through school and stuff. He is a great inspiring person," said student Jewel Osborne. "It's not just about what occurs in the classroom, teachers are real people. I think students want to see authenticity, to see what you are talking about is real, and you are living it and he does that," said Jinks Middle School Principal Samuel T. Jackson, Jr.
Mr. Gainer was surprised and delighted to learn Mary Mason nominated him for the award. "I've gave him some troubles, but I know like in his heart that he truly cares about all his students," said Mary Mason. "Typically students don't appreciate teachers till later on and to have a student acknowledge that he's making that kind of impact now, that they recognize that, I think that is powerful," said Principal Jackson.
Congratulations to Mr. Gainer, this week's Golden Apple award winning teacher. "They need people they can look up too, they need people that show them love and compassion and understands them. That is why I keep coming back year after year," said Gainer.
