Panama City - This week's Golden Apple award winner is Kamber Shaffer, a 4th grade teacher at Northside Elementary School in Panama City. There is a big emphasis on fun in Mrs. Shaffer's classroom, where hands on learning makes difficult concepts easier to understand.
It's just one example of how Kamber Shaffer makes learning fun. "I have learned that having fun through learning is what is going to stick with them. That is what is going to make them grasp those concepts and really hang onto that knowledge," she says.
Colleagues say her genuine interest in each child sets her apart. "She is very dedicated, and she works very hard, but I think the thing that makes her a very special teacher is she works hard to make connections to every student in her classroom, and the students love her for that," said Northside Elementary School Principal Wanda Robbins.
"I want to know these children, I want to know what is going on in their lives and I just feel like that helps me and it helps them. Some of these children really need that," said Mrs. Shaffer.
"I nominated Mrs. Shaffer because she is kind and loving and if we have trouble in math, she'll break down the steps, she is just a really awesome teacher," said student Brittany Rainelli.
"She teaches us things we really don't expect to learn, but after a few days of work you'd remember it for a long time," said student Tanner Reese.
"She has helped us with everything and if we don't understand something she explains it to the point we do understand it," said student Reagan Smith.
As for the teacher herself, she seems just as pleased as the students. "I don't think I could do anything else," said Mrs. Shaffer.
Congratulations to Kamber Shaffer, this week's Golden Apple award winning teacher. "My favorite thing in her class is her," said Brittany.
