Lynn Haven - It's time to meet this week's Golden Apple award winner. It's our way of showing teachers how much we appreciate their hard work. Ms. Kelley Revell is a 6th grade science teacher at Mowat Middle School. It wasn't just one student who nominated and voted for Ms. Revell, it was dozens.
Three students were the brains behind the operation. They teamed up to make sure their favorite teacher was recognized. "We mainly made a forward message and sent it to everyone in our phone and on Facebook and on Myspace and stuff," said student Amy Rainelli. "I nominated her and I got everybody I knew to nominate her," said student Alex Raplee. It worked.
Principal Ed Sheffield isn't surprised by the students' efforts. "I think you would find each of her classes would tell you that Ms. Revell is just the greatest, they love her, they really do. She makes science exciting," said Sheffield. "Science is one of those subjects that alot of people just don't like, so it's my goal to try to make it fun enough that they want to come back everyday," said Kelly Revell.
Her students say she is succeeding, by incorporating hands-on activities and group work. "Last year I didn't like science. This year it's my favorite subject," said student Amanda Thomas.
Ms. Revell says she loves working with 6th graders who are at a turning point in their academic careers. "Middle school is a time when they actually decide who they and what kind of student they are going to be. I hope during these formative years they develop a desire to learn more."
After 15 years in the classroom, Ms. Revell was thrilled and thankful that her students worked so hard to honor her. "We love what we do, but it is really nice to be recognized for it."
