PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla.(WJHG-WECP)-- The Florida Department of Transportation has installed edge line rumble strips on Back Beach Road in the 55 mph speed zone west of Richard Jackson Boulevard to Cauley Avenue.
The markings are placed on the white line between the travel lane and the bicycle lane to alert motorists who may drift out of their lane.
When a distracted driver starts to drift, the strips produce a loud rumble inside the vehicle alerting the driver.
The strips were installed on the area of Back Beach Road with the highest speed limit and most vehicular traffic. This also provides another safety measure for pedestrians and bikers using those lanes.
