MEXICO BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Mexico Beach City Council passes a resolution Tuesday implementing a fire assessment fee.

Council members voted 4-1 to have property owners pay 79 percent of the original assessment fee, meaning residential property owners will pay $281 this year in fees instead of $356.

Commercial property owners will pay 40 cents instead of 50 cents per square foot.

These fee changes are only for this year. The council voted to use some money already in the budget for the fire department.

The goal is to hire full-time firefighters and improve the city's insurance rating.
