Apple replaces pistol emoji with water gun in iOS 10

Apple is replacing the pistol emoji with a water gun emoji in iOS 10.

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG-WECP)-- There are lots of changes coming in iOS 10. But among the biggest announced Monday by Apple is the replacement of a pistol emoji with that of a water gun.

The emoji announcement came as Apple revealed more than 100 new emojis that will be a part of iOS 10 when it launches this fall. Among the other new emojis are things like women doing stereotypical male jobs like detective and construction worker. Also among the new emojis are a pride flag and family options for single parents according to CNNMoney.

An international consortium known as Unicode Consortium actually governs which emojis are available as part of operating systems like iOS and Android. Apple, Microsoft and Google are all a part of the Unicode Consortium.

The pistol emoji which Apple is doing away with is still available on other outlets like Twitter, Google and Facebook. Microsoft has, for years, used a super-hero looking toy gun with a lightning bolt on it for its pistol emoji.

According to CNNMoney, Apple didn't address the pistol removal in a statement about the new icons. The company said it hopes its new lineup of "popular emoji characters reflect the diversity of people everywhere."
