PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - It's round and weighs 800 lbs. Know what we're talking about?
Here's another hint: it will drop at midnight at Pier Park in Panama City Beach.
We're talking about the beach ball at the New Year's Eve Beach Ball Drop at Pier Park! The beach ball is the main attraction at the upcoming New Year's Eve event.
Martin Horak is the hand that makes the ball drop and it's all done on his iPad.
"It's a state of the art system now so we're able to control different colors, we have different programs," said Horak.
Bay County TDC officials tell us the beach ball cost around $500,000 and was paid for with bed tax dollars. Horak says the annual event is a huge undertaking.
"We start working on this back in June and July. It's a team effort. Many different moving parts and people involved. It all boils down to midnight on the 31st," said Horak.
He says there will be more than just the big beach ball dropped on Sunday.
"We have 10,000 beach balls which are released at 8 o'clock on the 31st for kids," said Horak.
At the world's most beautiful beaches the dropping of a beach ball just seems appropriate.
"It's one of a kind," said Horak.
According to NewsChannel7's weather team, they anticipate New Year's Eve night to be a chilly one, so bundle up!
