CareerSource releases May unemployment numbers for Gulf Coast

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - CareerSource has released its May unemployment numbers and things are looking up for the Gulf Coast region.

Unemployment for the Gulf Coast region (Bay, Gulf and Franklin counties) was 4.2% in May 2016. CareerSource says that's more than a full point lower than the region's year-ago rate of 5.4%.

Out of a labor force of 98,918, there were 4,174 unemployed residents in the region.

The state's unemployment rate was 4.4% in May.

CareerSource says, Franklin and Gulf counties both posted numbers below 4%; additionally, the Panama City MSA posted an overall increase of 800 jobs in May.

The leisure and hospitality industries gained over 700 new jobs, while education and health services saw over 400 new jobs added in the last year. Government jobs increased by over 400, professional and business services saw over 300 new jobs added in the last year.

CareerSource says, losses were reported in trade, transportation and utilities. That industry saw a loss of over 800 jobs. The information industry, as well as the financial activities industry saw losses of over 100 jobs in the last year.
