Clinics to fast-track flu testing for adult patients

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - In an effort to minimize emergency room overcrowding, and to expedite treatment of adult patients with flu-like symptoms, Bay Medical Sacred Heart has established two clinic sites for quicker diagnoses.

The beach location is next to the new ER on Panama City Beach Parkway, and there is one in town on Jenks Avenue. Doctor William Alan Woolery, DO PhD, says this will provide a service where you can get tested and treated much faster for adult patients.

"The wait time will be a lot shorter than going to the Emergency Room and sitting in the waiting room for hours before you get seen and treated. That's the whole key. We want to take that burden off the emergency rooms to be able to do that," Dr. Woolery says.

Bay Medical's Flu Clinics will also be offering flu shots for those who have not yet been vaccinated. While the vaccine is not as effective as in past years, physicians are still encouraging patients to get a flu shot.

"They're predicting that the flu vaccine is about 30 percent effective," Dr. Woolery said. "It does lessen the severity of the flu, lower your risk of being hospitalized if you get the flu, and it will lower your mortality rate if you get the flu, but it's not 100 percent effective.

Woolery says if you haven't been vaccinated, it's important to do so. Physicians are seeing a range of flu symptoms.

"Right now, it's fever usually greater than 101, muscle ache, nausea, vomiting, headache, lethargy, those are the more common ones we're seeing," he explained.

No appointments are needed for the clinics, and most major insurance is accepted. The clinics also have significantly discounted rates for those out of network or those who don't have health insurance.
