Giraffes at ZooWorld get closer to mating

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Internet's most famous giraffe, April from the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York, is still pregnant. She has been pregnant for the past 15 months and is in no hurry to deliver her calf.

According to Kayte Hogan, the Director of ZooWorld, the normal gestation period for a giraffe is 13 to 16 months. It isn't unheard of for giraffes to be pregnant for this long. When they do have their babies, they have them standing up.

"There's a whole evening period where we're not here and we don't see what goes on. So they may have recorded copulation that would have equated with a 14-month gestation that ended at a certain time. But there may have been something that they didn't get to see because it was private and it happened at night. Which means she's not quite as far along as we thought she was. It's just like people, you have a due date but it's not always when you give birth," said Hogan.

The two giraffes at ZooWorld, Chase and Lynn, are both around four-years old and have just hit reproductive maturity. Lynn is slightly older than Chase. According to ZooWorld officials, Chase has a major crush on Lynn.

"Chase is kind of like the 15-year old boy. He's just realized that he has a girl that lives with him and he's very, very excited by her. Lynn on the other hand, she needs some maturity in her partner," said Hogan.

If Chase keeps up his recent demeanor he may finally catch Lynn's attention.

"Chase has been working on his behavior over the last year. He has calmed down just a little bit, he's learned to be just a little bit more sweet to Lynn and she's starting to warm up as well. Hopefully 14 months from that we will have our own little giraffe calf," said Hogan.

Giraffes are currently listed vulnerable on the International Union for the Conversation of Nature Red List. They are just a step above endangered. Hopefully Lynn and Chase can help build back the giraffe population.
