GULF SHORES, Ala. (WPMI) - Gulf Shores City Council members voted unanimously Monday to enact a ban on alcohol during Spring Break 2017.

The new law will prohibit alcohol on beaches in the Gulf Shores city limits between March 4 and April 16 this coming spring. The city calls the measure "a valid exercise of police power" that will protect both locals and visitors.

The city tried out a similar ban last spring and said the results were promising.

Some business owners have expressed concern that the ban might chase away spring break vacationers and hurt the city's economy, but the idea has received wide support.
