PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Fourth of July weekend always brings tons of people to Panama City Beach, and one of the most popular modes of transportation is through Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport.
According to ECP Executive Director Parker McClellan, the airport saw nearly 6,000 people coming and going this past weekend.
"There were a lot of people out here this weekend. There were a lot of bags that went through our system," said McClellan. "But we know this is a really big holiday travel weekend."
McClellan said this year was bigger than any other year before.
"I think that it is a variety of components, whether it's summer, the middle of summer, a holiday weekend, but this is traditionally for our region, their busy time of year. July is the busiest time of the year and the Fourth of July just kicks us off with with a great start," said McClellan.
McClellan said he contributes the higher numbers to bigger and more frequent flight options.
"Delta put in bigger planes this year. Southwest has increased their number of flights, as has United," said McClellan.
