HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Holmes County Sheriff's Office recently opened a new substation in Ponce de Leon.
The station is located at 1572 Highway 90 in what was once an old hardware property.
The previous Ponce de Leon station closed four years ago after a storm damaged the building.
The site will serve as a location for deputies to stop and fill out reports, saving them a trip all the way back to Bonifay.
While the substation is currently unmanned, Sheriff Tate said he hopes to look at the budget and find a way to place someone there two to three days a week.
He said the substation also helps establish a presence in the area.
"Rather than have them come to the office or go somewhere out of sight, out of mind to do their reports, they're being seen," Tate said. "They're being seen in those communities. That's the goal, is visibility."
Sheriff Tate said since the Ponce de Leon station opened, he has had Esto officials contact him about a possible substation there as well.
