Escambia County inmate helps put out fire that injures Walton County inmate

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A Walton County inmate was severely burned Thursday while trying to start a piece of equipment.

Deputies say around 8 a.m. Thursday, Jason Brase, 22, received third degree burns while helping his work supervisor with a piece of equipment. They say the incident happened off Engles Road in DeFuniak Springs.

Deputies say as Brase was frantically trying to put out the fire on his clothes, an Escambia County inmate on the work crew came to his help. Deputies say Reco Brewington, 26, took off his own jacket, gained control of Brase, and put the fire out.

Medical staff at the hospital reportedly said if it weren't for the actions of Brewington, Brase's injuries would have been much worse. Brase had to have surgery Friday and was released Saturday.
