INLET BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - According to the National Fire Prevention Association, Thanksgiving is the peak day for home kitchen fires.
Ahead of Thanksgiving, the South Walton Fire District has cooking safety tips.
If you plan on frying a turkey, Sammy Sanchez, Fire Marshal for South Walton Fire District, said you should stay at least ten feet away from a building.
"Pay attention to your fryer. Don't walk away from it, definitely don't do it in a garage, or on top of a wooden deck. Again, stay away from a building and make sure, again, the important piece is that it's thawed and dried because if not, that's when you run into problems," Sanchez said.
If you have to walk away from the kitchen, Sanchez said you should turn burners off and have an appropriate-sized lid for a pot to smother a fire or an extinguishing agent.
"If something happens while you're not there, you know, that's when most kitchen fires happen is because nobody was watching the kitchen, so these are just some simple tips to keep in mind," he said.
Sanchez also recommended turning handles of pots and pans inward while on the stove top to prevent people from bumping into them.
