Local youth receive new sports gear, laptops

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Some local children were surprised with basketballs, soccer balls, hula hoops and laptops Wednesday.

The Panama City Rotary Club donated the items as well as mentoring services to the youth at the Panama City After School Assistance Program.

The money for the sporting goods and computers came from a grant by the district Rotary Club.

Grant Chairman Angela Warren says it's all to benefit local kids.

"It's important for them to have educational material as well as be able to exercise and have supplies for them and we saw it as a great opportunity to help," Warren said.

The A.S.A.P. was established by the Panama City Police Department to address community problems of juvenile crime and school dropout rates.
