Man faces charges after leaving child in hot car

CHIPLEY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Washington County Sheriff's officials announced the arrest of a Malone man Wednesday afternoon for leaving a child unattended in a hot car.

Reports indicate a concerned resident called the Washington County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) around Noon Tuesday who said a child was left alone in a hot car while the driver, later identified as 20-year-old Dillon Roberts, went into the Chipley Hardee's.

When deputies arrived at the restaurant, Roberts and the child were reportedly inside. Deputies said the child's face was red and his clothes were wet from sweat.

Officials said deputies questioned Roberts and he became angry asking "What's the big deal? I cracked the window," referring to the two back windows that were slightly opened.

“The outcome of leaving a child in a vehicle can be devastating,” WCSO Sheriff Crews said in a press release. “We are all aware of the recent news involving deaths caused by leaving children in hot vehicles, however, it can also result in injury or a kidnapping situation.”

Investigators determined the temperature was well into the 90s, and Roberts intentionally left the child alone in a very hot vehicle for up to 30 minutes as he waited inside.

Officials said the physical evidence and his statement led to Roberts' arrest. Deputies took him to the Washington County Jail where was charged with cruelty toward a child.

“I cannot express enough how grateful we are that calls were made by citizens who were concerned for the well-being of this child and we urge everyone to report any concerning or inappropriate behaviors involving children,” Sheriff Crews said.

Officials said you can contact WCSO anytime if you're aware of any crimes being committed at (850) 638-6111 or you can send an anonymous tip at (850) 638-TIPS (8477).
