PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Monday marks day two of the New Year - likely day one for many working on their New Year's resolution.

Hundreds of people chose Monday to start their new diet and workout plan and gyms are ready for them.

Like the mythological phoenix, trainers at Phoenix Performance Fitness Center in Panama City are ready to help people transform themselves from the inside out.

Gym Representative Ryan Corley said January is the busiest time of the year for any gym.

"Well earlier we were really, really busy and a lot of members here," he said. "We were closed for the new year so a lot of members coming in just to get their first workout after the holidays."

On a typical month, Phoenix will sing up about 40 to 50 new members. This month they're experiencing double that and they've been preparing.

"We make sure that we're staffed as much as we can be," Corley said.

He also said they make sure all staff members are properly trained to help new members adapt.

Wade Kinard is a recent gym member. He said he doesn't really believe in New Year's resolutions but can see the benefit of the kick start.

"For anyone who can be inspired by that I would recommend it," Kinard said. "I don't see anything wrong with it. If you can do it, you can do it."

Not only do gyms want to beef up membership they also want to keep the new members.

Corley said one of the best ways to stay motivated is to bring a friend or a buddy.

"We have membership packages for the family, add ons as well," he said. "So if you don't want to work our by yourself you can bring a family member to work out with you."

Corely also recommends making sure you improve your nutrition to help fuel the workout. And don't be afraid to ask gym staff for help when you need it. And when the going gets tough, he recommends remembering why you walked in the door in the first place.

"If you have kids or grand kids, that's motivation right there."
