Oversight Committee meets to review progress of Oscar Patterson

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - School leaders and community members gathered to review the progress of a local elementary school.

The Oscar Patterson Elementary School Oversight Committee met Tuesday afternoon to introduce committee members, review teaching strategies, and assess the state of the school.

Average scores based off of educational growth have improved for grades second through fifth in math and reading, but do not quite meet student norms nationwide.

Ahead of testing season, we're told the school will offer Saturday morning tutoring to improve student performance.

"They reach out to the public to make them aware of this and hopefully parents will just come out and send their kids out so they can see that something is done," Sharon Sheffield, Oversight Committee Chair, said.

Bay District Schools has been added to the next State Board agenda to request an additional year before having to make a decision to close the school or have an outside operator take over.
