UPDATE: Pedestrian dead after Jackson County hit-and-run

JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - UPDATE 6/21/17 8:46 P.M. :

Melvin Henderson, 57, has died from his injuries sustained in a Jackson County hit-and-run Friday night.

Henderson was heading west on Country Road on 162 just after 9:30 p.m. when he was struck by a car from behind.

He was airlifted to Southeast Dothan Hospital.
A Cottondale man is in serious condition after a hit-and-run crash in Jackson County Friday night.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, Melvin Henderson, 57, was heading west on County Road 162 just after 9:30 p.m.

FHP officials said he was in a wheelchair in the travel lane in front of a car driven by Dennis Crawford, 62, of Greenwood.

They say Crawford hit the back of the wheelchair, propelling Henderson into a ditch.

Henderson was airlifted to Southeast Dothan Hospital.

Crawford left the scene, but later contacted officials to report a crash, although he reported not knowing what he hit.

Charges are pending an investigation.
