Late P.E. coach's memory honored with "buddy bench"

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A labor of love assembled for a beloved teacher.

Rutherford High School's Construction Academy students built a "buddy bench" for Hutchison Beach Elementary's playground in honor of beloved teacher, Coach Webb.

"Well, at the beginning of this school year, we lost one of our teachers unexpectedly, Coach Webb, and it devastated our Beach family. So the students would come up with ideas how can we keep his memory active," Glenda Nouskhajian, Hutchison Beach Elementary Principal, said.

As Beach students explained, a "buddy bench" fosters friendship. If a student is alone on the playground, he or she can sit on the bench. Then, a fellow student can join the student on the bench and invite him or her to play.

The Construction Academy's teacher said he wants to instill the importance of giving back to the community in his students.

"You know, it's important for people to see you at there doing something. It's not always about how much money you make, you know, it's what do you do for the community, and this is perfect for the class," Jason Rodgers, Construction Academy teacher, said.

Beach Elementary's students told us Coach Webb loved seeing his students display teamwork.

"He loved seeing other people work together, and so if he saw us right now, he would be really happy," Maddie Goeden, a Beach Elemetary student, said.

Rutherford High School's Construction Academy charges $50 for a "buddy bench" order. If you're interested in ordering one, you may contact Jason Rodgers or Rutherford High School.

Rodgers said the Academy has received a few bench orders already.
