Saint Dominic Catholic Church welcomes Bishop-elect

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - As part of its 100th year celebration, Saint Dominic Catholic Church held a special mass in Panama City Saturday morning.

The new Pensacola-Tallahassee Bishop-elect William Wack delivered the message during his first visit to the church.

Wack will be overseeing more than 50 churches and missions throughout the panhandle, about 65,000 Catholic Floridians.

Others in attendance included some of the first parishioners and priests to Saint Dominic.

Wack said when he was first asked to be the panhandle's Bishop, he was shocked and humbled.

"He said, 'O.K., what I'm about to tell you now will change your life, but do not be afraid, the Holy Spirit is with you, the Holy Father has chosen you to be Bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee,' and I dropped to the floor basically and he said, 'Are you okay?' and I said, 'Just give me a moment if you would!'"

Wack will be installed as the new Bishop August 22nd.
