PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG) - While many people are used to getting spam emails, getting spam via text is a new strategy used by criminals who are trying to get individuals' personal financial information.
According to the Bay County Sheriff's Office Financial Crimes Unit, Smishing is the newest scam.
It's similar to phishing emails but smishing is a SMS text from a familiar business, like a store or bank.
The scam SMS text will ask you for your name, address, and birthdate, and if you provide that information they can access your financial records.
"It's to get people caught off. So the keyword is to be lured into the situation and then they've got your information and they get your financial data, etc. and try to get your bank accounts and that's how that works," said Paul Vecker, Bay County Sheriff's Office Financial Crimes Unit Investigator.
Vecker told us the best way to avoid these scams is to not ever give out any personal information on your phone or via text.
He also told us there has been two smishing type cases in Bay County.
