Students sent home from school after Southport power outage

SOUTHPORT, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - It was an unusual start to the day for Southport Elementary students and faculty.

Because of Wednesday morning's power outage in Southport, students were sent home.

Power came back on later in the morning.

Southport Principal Holly Buchanan said the parents and students were flexible and all but 18 students were able to be picked up from school that morning.

She said the district sent out an IRIS Alert and posted to social media.

"We just want to thank our parents for acting so quickly. I know it was a challenge to get back to school to pick up your students or to pick up your children and so we just want to thank you for all of your support and acting so quickly," Buchanan said.

She went on to say the school handled the situation as if it were an emergency and followed procedure accordingly.
