U.S. Flags retired at Sims Veterans Home

CALLAWAY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The American Flag had its very own retirement party at Chester Sims Veterans Home in Callaway Saturday morning. Veterans braved the heat during the ceremony.

It started with the singing of "God Bless America" followed by the pledge of allegiance. Then the youth group "Trail Life" retired 100 U.S. flags. The flags being retired had been damaged.

This is the second time trail life has performed this ceremony at Sims Veterans Home.

"We are retiring the US flag today. It's a sign of respect to retire the US flag and it is important to show respect to this flag because veterans have died for this flag and wounded for this flag and are willing to die for this flag," said Benjamin Richards, Trail Life participant.

Two fire barrels were cut vertically in half to consume the flags.
