PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP)-- "Can you hear me now?" Maybe, maybe not thanks to a major phone outage affecting Verizon Wireless customers across Florida.

The outage started Tuesday afternoon. According to texts from Verizon reps obtained by WJHG/WECP, "All phone networks are down. Statewide. I apologize. We are working to fix it asap. It is the the issue with long distance trunks affecting Gulf coast. All landline and cellular companies are affected."

The problems are hit-and-miss. Some Verizon customers report being able to receive calls, but not place calls. Others aren't receiving any calls at all. Some customers report being able to get texts and data, while others only get texts OR data.

Downdetector.com, a website that specializes in gathering outage information from every major communication company, indicated that outage complaints spiked Tuesday afternoon. An outage map on downdetector.com shows major outages affecting Panama City, Tallahassee and most of the peninsula of Florida.

No restoration time has been announced by Verizon as of 6:50 p.m..
